Spring Hill Cemetery Association Officers
President: William P. (Bill) Matthews of Mexia, Texas. A descendent of Sampson and Catherine (Wiley) Stewart who came to North Carolina USA from County Down, Northern Ireland. The Stewart’s daughter, Mary Ann, married Robert Matthews in North Carolina in 1800 and moved the following year to Maury County Tennessee where their 10 children were born several of them coming to Texas and Spring Hill. Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Bill Matthews is a veteran of 26 years with the United States Army including service in Viet Nam with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. During his military career LTC Matthews worked at multiple Army installations in the US along with tours in Belgium (NATO), Egypt, Viet Nam, Panama, and England. From these assignments he was able to visit many nearby countries. Colonel Matthews speaks enough Spanish, Vietnamese, German, French, and Arabic to get along in countries speaking those languages. Following his retirement from Army Colonel Matthews began teaching science to 7th grade students. After five years of teaching, he was asked to become the principal of a middle school campus. During the ten years that followed his campus earned many awards including the highest academic rating given by the state of Texas, Exemplary. Colonel Matthews has been married to Caroline for 46 years and this marriage has produced four children and nine grandchildren. All of the children and their spouses have college degrees, several have masters degrees and one son-in-law is a pediatric dentist. Colonel Matthews is active in church serving as Deacon Chairman, Sunday School Director and Teacher, and member of the choir. He is a long time member of the local Lions Club. Secretary: James (Jim) Williams of Colleyville, Texas. Jim is also a descendent of Mary Ann (Stewart) and Robert Matthews. Jim grew up in Fort Worth, and currently lives in Colleyville, Texas with his wife Agnés and their children Daniel and Michele. Jim’s 2nd great-grant parents James Jefferson Coffey and Ann Elizabeth (Mathews) Coffey are both buried at Spring Hill, along with her father Sampson Stewart Mathews. The Mathews and Coffey families were the first of Jim’s ancestors to immigrate to Texas, in 1869.Having been in the computer software industry all his life, in 1980 he started a systems software company in Arlington called Southwest Software, which later in 1986 went public as Altai Inc. Jim served as President/CEO until the company was acquired in 1995. Since then he has been a private investor, father, active in Indian Princesses and Indian Guides, and a volunteer for the Colleyville Heritage High School swim team. Jim’s interest in genealogy and family history stems from his father’s life-long pursuit of discovering ancestors and their stories, and finding their resting places.
Treasurer: Cecil Sanders of Dawson, Texas. Married to Billie Sue Matthews also a descendent of Mary Ann and Robert Matthews. Her great grandmother, the daughter of Mary Ann and Robert, was Minerva Kathryn Matthews Slauter Hill having married Dr. G W Hill following the death of her first husband Francis Slauter. Minerva Kathryn and Francis Frank Slauter’s son born in Texas in 1836 was Robert Francis Slauter whose daughter, Roberta (Bobbie) Anna married her second cousin, William Newton Matthews. (Billie’s grand-dad).
Cecil retired from International Harvester Company in 1991 after 36 years; and he and Billie moved to Dawson to live on 24 acres of the original G W Hill land. They are members of The First Baptist Church in Dawson where they were married in 1956. Cecil currently writes the Dawson news for the Hubbard City News which is printed weekly. He and Billie have purchased burial plots in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
